Kutná Hora Apartment 01

Project type

Restoration

Date

2023

Location

Kutná Hora, Czech Republic

This ongoing restoration transforms a more than 400-year-old townhouse in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kutná Hora into a place for contemporary living while preserving its historic character. Rather than replacing the building's past, the project celebrates it—revealing original masonry, restoring Art Nouveau decorative paintings, repairing traditional windows and doors, and carefully integrating modern services into the historic fabric.

The renovation has been carried out in phases over several years, beginning with structural stabilization, a new roof structure, complete replacement of water and drainage systems, and the creation of the first apartment. The second apartment was later restored to a higher standard, combining modern comfort with authentic historic details. Shared outdoor spaces, including a stone courtyard, garden, terrace, and fire pit, extend the living experience beyond the house itself.

The design philosophy is based on minimal intervention, honest craftsmanship, and respect for the building's evolution over four centuries. Contemporary additions remain deliberately understated, allowing the original architecture to remain the focal point.

When completed, the house will provide unique accommodation where visitors can experience the atmosphere of historic Kutná Hora while living within an authentic piece of the city's architectural heritage.
